Introduction

Parallax

A parallax, by definition, is the apparent displacement of an observed object due to a change in the position of the observer. This so-called “change in position” could be caused by something as simple and distinguishable as the angle from which the object in question is being viewed — eye level, aerial perspective, three-point perspective — or something more abstract such as cultural upbringing, generational zeitgeist, and educational background.

One could further reason that a parallax is, in essence, a rejection of the reductive in that it disagrees with the notion that there is a straightforward interpretation or simple solution to products of culture — and, by extension, the world. Agnostic to the universal, a parallax welcomes subjective answers and probing questions; stories, art, and film are allowed to be perpetually insoluble, open to myriad interpretations. And while more emphasis is placed on the subjective, readings, analyses, and understandings are not always irreducibly specific to a single observer. There is always a chance for people to have shared experiences: Resonance and subjectivity are not mutually exclusive.

I am creating this blog to share my own readings, criticisms, and thoughts. With the understanding that my analytical gaze has been shaped by my personal experiences and predetermined set of circumstances, I do not intend to provide definitive answers; rather, my goal is to offer another voice, another opinion, another interpretation.

Reading, writing, watching, and critiquing to better understand the world around me. They say a journey can be artwork — here’s mine.
